1943-44 Home White Marines Jersey

The home version of the wartime Marines baseball jersey a recent discovery. This is the first such jersey to be seen in a decade.

Showing the soutache and the blue button over the letter on the placket.

Identical in almost every respect to the road gray jersey of the same era, this home white jersey is essentially a mirrored representation. However, unlike the gray counterpart, this jersey is extremely rare (it is the only one that to surface in the last decade) A standard feature of this WWII jersey is the non-standard button hole alignment, the result of which places a button centered in the lettering on the placket. The lone blue button for this particular position matches the blue coloring of the wool felt letter on which it rests when the buttons are fastened.

In addition to the jersey, a ball cap accompanies this display. This cap is constructed of wool, features a leather sweatband and the gold “M” matches the lettering on the jersey. The ball cap was located independently of the jersey but there are photos that show a dark cap with the Marine uniform (the owner is attempting to re-locate the images).

Uniform Features:

  • Buttons: The buttons are white-colored plastic, convex, two-hole with the exception of the (blue) color-matched one, positioned over the “I” in the M A R I N E S lettering.
  • Material: The base material is light-weight road creamy white wool-flannel.
  • Soutache: A double line of thin blue rayon material encircling the collar and down the placket. The closely-aligned double line soutache is positioned at the edge of the sleeve cuffs.
  • Lettering: Lightweight blue athletic felt block lettering spelling out the team name in an arc across the chest, on both sides of the placket.
  • Numerals: None.
  • Sleeves: Ten-twelve inches, gusseted with embroidered armpit vent holes.
  • Other features: None
  • Tag:  No manufacturer’s tags. There is a small white tag with red numerals indicating the size of the jersey (“38”).
